Thank you friends for visiting my grandpa on his BIRTHDAYS, ANGEL DAYS, ANNIVERSARIES and all other days in between. My family and I deeply appreciate your thoughtfulness.

Tom Duckworth was born in Blackburn, England ~ the oldest of three sons born to John and Sarah Duckworth.

He was tall and slim, with blonde hair and blue eyes, when he married his sweetheart Jane Sharples on February 14, 1915. She was lovely, with her long chestnut hair, soft brown eyes and rose petal complexion.

Altogether they had six children ~ John (Jack), Thomas Jr. (Tommy), Walter (Walt), Dorothy (Dolly), Eleanor (Ellie) and little Sarah, who they lost shortly after her birth.

Grandpa was a hardworker and instilled a strong work ethic in his children. He owned and operated the Norwalk funeral home during the 1930's through the 1940's. Times were tough during the depression; he and my mother Ellie would bring frozen turkeys and canned goods during the holidays to the families hardest hit ~ those who had lost a loved one; especially a child or an infant.

Grandpa could have a gruff exterior, but there was another side to him besides his kind and compassionate nature. He loved to tease his wife and children and later his grandchildren. He could be so funny and off the wall with his humor.

The family loved animals. They had a little terrier mix named Tiny, who they would tell to go get Grandma, when it was time for a meal. She would run to great-grandma Sally's door and bark excitedly ~ loving the importance of her job and her place in the family.

In 1946, tragedy struck Tom and his family. They lost my dear grandma Jane to complications from diabetes. She was only 46 years of age. Every Sunday, for a long time, Grandpa would bring a fold out chair to the cemetery as soon as it would open, and sit by her grave for long stretches of time. He would never remarry.

Later on, Grandpa would sell the funeral home, and buy the house that I would remember him living in. From here he would sell grave markers, or monuments. Whenever his grandchildren would visit, he made sure that we would be quiet whenever he was conducting business; he could be strict when necessary.

Usually one Sunday a month, Grandpa and Grandma Sally (his mother) who had been living with him for some time now, would have the entire family over for dinner. HE WAS THE BEST COOK. The one dish that I remember him making the most was meat and potato pie. It was my own personal favorite.

Grandpa, as I said loved animals. He would end up attracting all of the cats in the neighborhood by putting out cans of cat food near his back fence, because he felt sorry for the strays. One day the circus came to town. In fact it was being held in an open field across the street from his house. My Aunt and cousin happened to be visiting that day. Suddenly, they heard a creaking sound on the front porch, then this enormous face with golden eyes appeared at the screen door ~ a lion! His three potential snacks stood there transfixed. Finally Grandpa calmly said, "don't move." The lion probably thought what a novel experience it was, being on the outside looking in for a change. Eventually though, he became bored with the humans and left. He was after all, old, tired and missing most of his teeth ~ (the lion of course, not Grandpa) or the story may have had a different outcome.

MEMORIES

The love we have for Grandpa
Will never fade away.
We'll think of him, our special friend
Throughout each passing day.
We'll walk into the room
And see his empty chair;
Although we know he's resting,
We'll feel his presence there.
The memories of his laughter,
His warm and loving smile,
His eyes so full of happiness,
His heart that of a child.
Memories are forever
Be they laughter or of tears,
Memories we will treasure
Through all the forthcoming years. ~Anon.

I miss my precious Grandpa ~ whenever I would kiss him, he would say Hotdog! His nickname for me was "FATHEAD". His favorite song was Beautiful Dreamer.

I love you, Grandpa!
