Son of John Brown and Elizabeth Cranston, married in 1717 to Joan Lucas. Capt. John Brown was a prominent Newport merchant as well as an active member and vestryman of Trinity Church. In 1739, Brown and other elite merchants outfitted an armed vessel to protect their trade routes during the Anglo-Spanish war.
