FERN IRENE CARTER of Pomona, passed away at home on January 12, 2011. She was born May 5, 1918, in Mt. Carmel, Illinois, as Fern Irene Wood. She was raised, married, and raised her sons in Mt. Carmel, before moving to Pomona, California, in 1959. She worked at Pomona Valley Community Hospital in the business office for more than thirty years. During that time she married Charles Carter, who preceded her in death. She was an active member at First Baptist Church of La Verne from 1970 until her recent illness. In her retirement years she traveled and served on the election board. She is survived by her sons, Bill Quick (June) of Allendale, Illinois, and Chris Quick of La Verne; her grandsons, Bill Quick (Debbie) of Tumwater, Washington, and Chris Quick of Mt. Carmel, Illinois; her granddaughters, Kassandra Vana (George) of La Verne and Kristina Marshall (Dan) of Alta Loma. She took great pride in her great-grandchildren, Allison and Stephanie Vana of La Verne, Seth Marshall of Alta Loma, and Cameron Quick of Tumwater, Washington. Services will be held on Saturday, 1/15/11, at 2:00 P.M. at Todd Memorial Chapel in Pomona. Burial will be at Highland Memorial Cemetery in Mt. Carmel, Illinois. In lieu of flowers, charitable donations can be made to the National Breast Cancer Foundation in her honor as a breast cancer survivor.

Fern I. Quick, 92, of Pomona, CA, formerly of Mt. Carmel, IL, passed away at her residence in Pomona, CA, Wednesday, January 12th, 2011. Fern was born May 5th, 1918 to Marsh and Mary Ellen (Buchanan) Wood in Friendsville, IL. She married Harry R. Quick on August 13th, 1935.

Fern worked at the Mt. Carmel Clothing Factory, Home Dairy, and the Mt. Carmel Telephone Office. After the death of her husband, Harry, in 1951, Fern moved to Pomona, CA in 1959 and worked at the Pomona Valley Community Hospital in the business office for more than thirty years until her retirement. During that time, she married Charles Carter, who preceded her in death. She was an active member of the First Baptist Church in LaVerne, CA, from 1970 until her death. She is survived by her sons, William R. Quick (June) of Allendale and Christopher M. Quick (Nancy Smith) of La Verne, CA; her grandsons William R. Quick (Debbie) of Olympia, WA and Christopher M. Quick (Kim Robbins- Evansville, IN) of Allendale; her granddaughters, Kassandra Vana (George) of La Verne, CA and Kristina Marshall (Daniel) of Alta Loma, CA.

She is also survived by her great-grand children; Allison and Stephanie Vana of La Verne, CA; Seth Marshall of Alta Loma, CA and Cameron Quick of Olympia, WA. Finally, she is survived by a sister, Clarabelle Hockgeiger, of Mt. Carmel and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by four brothers, Francis, Kyle, Ray and Cecil Wood, and two sisters, Nola Mae Burton and Martha Goodson, all of Wabash County.

Friends may call at Short's Funeral Home on Saturday, January, 22, from 12:00 p.m. until the time of service at 2:00 p.m. Her grandson, Christopher M. Quick, will officiate. Burial will follow at Highland Memorial Cemetery.
