Johan's place of birth was most likely Esslingen am Neckar, Germany. He and his wife Margarethe arrived in New Jersey around 1752 on the ship Bennett Galley that departed from Rotterdam, Netherland. What was unusual for the time, he was literate and signed his name on the manifest.

He was a weaver and made his living in a small township called Remsterville, but it has since been abandoned (I believe there is a Boy Scout Camp that now exists on the area where the town had been.)

A descendant of his, George Remster, is buried in the same churchyard. In the picture of the church, on the right hand side, nearest to the building is his grave. He was a shipbuilder and owned the Morningstar of Alloway.
