Mrs. Elizabeth Burke, 87, 225 Pottawatomie, died Monday afternoon at St. John's Hospital. she had been a patient for the past week and had been in failing health for the past six months.
Born Sept. 16, 1876 in Kessel, Germany, she was a daughter of William and Elizabeth Wendel. Coming to Leavenworth with her parents at an early age. She had lived here for more than 75 years.
On Feb. 14, 1898 in Leavenworth she married Thomas Burke. Mr. Burke died Jan. 1, 1939. she was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church, and the Ladies Aid.
Mrs. Burke is survived by six daughters, Miss Elizabeth Burke, Mrs. Agnes Klotz and Mrs. Nellie Collins, all of the home; Mrs. Marie Hatfield, 815 9th Ave; Mrs Christine Crow, 1705 S. 5th, and Mrs Margaret Taylor, Oklahoma City; three sons, Edward Burke, 112 Miami; John Burke, 1048 Shrine Park Rd.; and M. Sgt. Thomas Burke, 769 Metropolitan; three sisters, Mrs Mary Felske, RR 4; Mrs Ann Kreutzer, 712 Ottawa, and Mrs. Martha Frietchen, 722 Ottawa; 17 grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren. Funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at St. Paul's Lutheran Church. Chaplain Edwin E. Berner will officiate. Burial will be in No. 6 Cemetery, Millwood. The body will be at the Larkin Funeral home until 12:15 p.m. Thursday.
