May was the second of twelve children. She and her brother, Adelbert, were the only two born in Iowa. The family moved west to California by wagon and finally settled in Saticoy, in Ventura County. They also had a ranch in Yavapai County, Arizona and that is where May met her husband, John. They were married in Prescott on 10 May, 1983 and had two children, John Frank and Imogene. John Daugherty was, at one time, the mayor of Prescott and was also very involved in gold mining in the area. By 1910 they had moved to San Diego, CA where they lived for the remainder of their lives.
