For more than 30 years, William L. Lightbody built homes for families in DuPage and McHenry Counties. But for those who had no home, he volunteered for the late shift at his church's homeless shelter through the PADS organization. "He would get up at 2 a.m. and get to St. Daniel the Prophet by 3 a.m. and volunteer until 7 a.m.," said his wife, Lynne. "He did it because it was hard to find people to do that shift and he felt he could do it. And then he went to work." Mr. Lightbody, 61, a 27-year resident of Wheaton, died of a heart attack on Saturday, April 9, in Central DuPage Hospital in Winfield. Born in Peoria, Mr. Lightbody moved to La Grange when he was 7. After graduating from high school he worked for General Motors on the assembly line for 10 years before selling homes his father built. At age 28 he opened his own business, Ivco Inc., based in Wheaton. It was never his intention to become a big builder or developer, his wife said. "The most he built in one year was 12 homes," she said. "He wanted to stay small. He didn't want to go big because I think he was comfortable doing it and he put a lot of pride into building his homes." Mr. Lightbody was a fourth-degree member of the Knights of Columbus and an avid boater and traveler. He was an active member of the Northern Illinois Homebuilders Association and the Greater Homebuilders Association. He married Lynne, his second wife, in 1980. Other survivors include his daughter, Jacquelyn; sons Scot, James and Paul; his mother, Ida; sisters Marilyn Bliss and Cheryl Koehl; a brother, Gary Mitchell; and two grandchildren. Services will begin at 9:15 a.m. Wednesday in Williams-Kampp Funeral Home, 430 E. Roosevelt Rd., Naperville, followed by mass at 10 a.m. in St. Daniel the Prophet Catholic Church, 101 West Loop Drive, Wheaton.
