Mrs. Devoe, whose maiden name was Charlotte Richard, was born at River Bourgeois 75 years ago. She came with her parents when quite young to Little Bras d'Or, where she resided ever since. About 57 years ago she married the late Capt. Peter Des Veaux (Devoe) (Deveau), by whom she had a very large family of eleven sons and five daughters. The sons: William P, John F, Frederick & James W. reside at Little Bras d'Or, Matthew in Boston, Richard, Charles A., Albert & Arthur H. in Montana, Abraham, who died in Montana a few years ago; & Thomas H [Brother Abdonis] who was a Christian Brother, died in Amawalk, N. Y. some years ago. The daughters are: Mrs. John Coakley & Mrs. Alfred King who reside at Little Bras d'Or; Mrs. J W Edwards, Groves Point; Mrs. J. W. Conlin, Fridley, Montana & Emily who died an infant. She had 45 grandchildren and 18 great grandchildren. Mrs. Devoe was a true type of French Acadian in every characteristic of that time, thrifty and industrious race. She was a model mother, giving the most scrupulous care and attention to the rearing of her children properly and one of the last advices she gave to her daughters-in-law was ' Be Good to the Children.' She was a great favourite of her grandchildren and great grandchildren. Even the little tots rushed to her arms to be caressed, which spoke louder than words. Personally she was quiet and retiring, exceedingly charitable, and her charity was always accompanied by the request that the party received it should not mention it to anyone. She was only a few days ill. Fortified by the last rites of the Roman Catholic Church she died a peaceful and happy death, surrounded by many of her relatives. Her funeral was a very large one to the church, where requiem high mass was celebrated after which interment took place at the Roman Catholic cemetery at Little Bras d'Or, Rev. J W. McIsaac officiating.
