Journalist, Author. Forced to earn her living when her family fortune was lost, she worked as a journalist covering politics and diplomacy, earning her a position in Berlin society, where she met many of the high-ranking Nazis. Her outspoken liberalism soon put her in a precarious situation with the Hitler regime, and she was forced to write under a pseudonym, although still attending diplomatic and social events. Under increasing pressure from the Nazis because of her liberal views, she emigrated to the United States in September 1938. After World War II broke out, she published a book called "Blood and Banquets," which she said was made from entries in a diary she had kept in Berlin. Recent historians believe that she actually wrote the book from secondary sources and from her memories, but it is still renowned as a colorful description of German high society in the 1920's and 1930's, and is still widely used as a source by historians. There is a collection of her writings and diaries at Boston University, in the Howard Gotlieb Archival Research Center.
