Alfus Milton Coffey was born on 18 June 1912 in Sweetwater, Oklahoma to Joseph Lee "Joe" and Ora Avaline Thomas Coffey. He married Lula Inez Sparks there on 17 January 1931. The couple moved to Erick, Oklahoma in February 1949 where Alfus worked first for the railroad and Modern Farm and Home Supply and then took a job with the Oklahoma Department of Transportation; he retired in 1977. He was a member of the Sweetwater Assembly of God Church from 1938 until his death.
