Born in Sweetwater, Oklahoma in 1932, Ronnie was the only child of Alfus Milton and Lula Inez Coffey. He graduated from Sweetwater High School in 1950; on 27 October of the following year, he married Levota Marie Walters in Eufaula, Oklahoma. Ronnie became a licensed Assembly of God preacher on 9 February 1951 and was ordained an Assembly of God minister on 9 October 1957. He subsequently pastored churches in Pleasantville, Roosevelt, Hollis, Granite, Sweetwater, Blair, Putnam (Roseland), Fort Cobb, Cement, Pryor (Lone Chapel), Okmulgee, and Red Oak, Oklahoma. Ronnie and Levota had three children, Glenda Lou (Walden), Brenda Gail (Foshee) and Ronna Kay (Hatley).
