Civil War: Company F, 38th Iowa Infantry

William was a resident of West Union, Iowa, and 18 years old when he enlisted for 3 years as a private on August 12, 1862. He was mustered into Company F, 38th Iowa Infantry, on November 4, 1862. Private Abbott was discharged for disability at Saint Louis, Missouri, on February 25, 1863. He married Sarah Marie Teets October 16, 1881. He was a member of John Sedgwick Post, No. 17, Grand Army of the Republic. He filed for a Civil War veteran pension in California on March 6, 1890, and received certificate No. 759,255. Shortly after his death, Sarah filed for a Civil War widow's pension March 6, 1902, and received certificate No. 757,973. The guardian of his minor child (Sarah Graham) filed for a pension on May 29, 1903, and received certificate No. 785,341. Three of William's brothers were also Civil War veterans; Byron Abbott (Co. B, 7th Ohio Infantry), Squire Abbott (Co. H, 18th Iowa Infantry), and Edward John Abbott (Co. C, 12th Iowa Infantry).
