Civil War: Company D, 23rd Missouri Infantry

William Robeson Allen was born in Harrison County, Missouri, his parents were both born in Tennessee. During the Civil War he enlisted as a private for 3 years on or about September 1, 1861, and was mustered into Company D, 23rd Missouri Infantry. Private Allen was discharged on or about July 17, 1865, at Louisville, Kentucky. After the war he returned to his parents' farm in Harrison County (1870 US Census). He filed for a Civil War veteran disability pension in Harrison County on May 25, 1877, and received certificate No. 323,584. Soon thereafter he married Nancy Mabelia Lawrence in Harrison County about 1879 and they made a home in Harrison County (1880 US Census). He moved to Orange, California, sometime between 1894-1899, where he operated a farm (1900, 1910, 1920 US Census). He was a member of Santa Ana's Sedgwick Post, No. 17, Grand Army of the Public. Nancy died in Garden Grove in 1918 and William remained there until his own death in 1925. He was buried by his Grand Army comrades in Santa Ana Cemetery.

WILLIAM R. ALLEN - At his home in Garden Grove, April 19, 1925, W. R. Allen, aged 77 years. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, April 22nd, at 10 a.m. from Smith and Tuthill's Chapel. Interment Fairhaven Cemetery. Services at the grave in charge of Sedgwick Post, G.A.R.
