Civil War: Company E, 74th Indiana Infantry

Henry Oscar Alsbach was born in Lucas County, Ohio, in November 1843, the son of Michael and Sarah (Walters) Alsbach (1850 US Census). The family was living in Elkhart County, Indiana, by 1860 (1860 US Census). During the Civil War he enlisted as a private for 3 years in Elkhart County on July 28, 1862. Private Alsbach was mustered into Company E, 74th Indiana Infantry. He was mustered out at Washington, Delaware, June 9, 1865. After the war he went to work as a butcher in Lycoming County, Pennsylvania (1870 US Census). He married Emma Jane Reed (Aug. 1848, PA) in 1870 and lived in Ohio before going to Missouri about 1877. He filed for a Civil War veteran disability pension in Ohio on April 21, 1876, and received certificate No. 901,227. He then moved his family to Walnut, Kansas, about 1880 (1885 KS Census). He was back at Elkhart in Elkhart County, Indiana, by 1891 (1900 US Census). He moved his family to Santa Ana, California, in 1902, where shortly after their arrival Ethel Marie died. He planted walnut and orange groves and was living there with Emma and four of their adult children: Carrie, 37, John, 28, Edith, 23, and George, 18 (1910 US Census). He was still living there with Emma, Carrie, 44, and George, 27 (1920 US Census). He was a member of John Sedgwick Post, No. 17, Grand Army of the Republic. A stroke left him paralyzed in the left leg and arm. With his health declining, he was admitted to the Pacific Branch, National Home for Disabled Volunteer Soldiers, at Sawtelle from his home in Santa Ana on March 27, 1924. He died at the soldiers' home the following month of bronchial pneumonia and his remains were sent to Santa Ana for burial. Emma then filed for a Civil War widow's pension April 29, 1924, and received certificate No. 950,812.
