Raymond J. Azevedo
August 19, 1944 - March 24, 2017
Raymond J. Azevedo, age 72, died on Friday, March 24,2017. He was born in downtown Sonora, to Joseph and Nina Azevedo, Aug. 19, 1944. He had four sisters, Helen Bates, of Tacoma, Washington, Frances Gardner, of Tuttletown, Marianne Walker, of Riddle, Oregon, and Patricia Mohr, of Citrus Heights.
In high school, he enjoyed FFA. He worked as a ranch hand for Elmer Wight at the age of 10, then he worked at Sylva’s Dairy, Hales and Symons, built houses, and was a Caltrans worker for 33 years. He loved his Caltrans work, especially plowing snow.
After retiring, he kept busy by paving roads and driving logging trucks. He loved being outside and working with his cows. He had a love for trains and loved volunteering at Railtown in Jamestown. He was a part of the Historical Railroad Society and a volunteer at Cal Fire. Ray enjoyed the company of close friends and family.
Raymond is preceded in death by parents; his son, John Azevedo; and three nephews.
He is survived by his loving wife of 43 years, Kathleen Azevedo, of Tuttletown; his children, Antoniette Azevedo, of Jamestown, Danette Argo, of San Francisco, Daniel Azevedo, of Sonora, and Ronda Azevedo, of Tuttletown; 15 grandchildren, Deanna Azevedo, Sabrina Azevedo, Jeanette Fertuna, Tanya Fertuna, Kenneth Fertuna, Jr., Stefan Argo, Erika Argo, Dakota Argo, JaSarah White, Makayla Azevedo, Jakob Azevedo, Joseph Detjens, Terrakay Detjens, Chris Marin, Tyler Marin; and 14 great-grandchildren.
Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. April 1, 2017, at Terzich and Wilson Funeral Home, 225 E. Rose St., Sonora. Everyone who knew Ray is welcome. A gathering will follow after at the Red Church in Sonora.
