George was only 17 years old. He began his life in Mason Valley, Nevada.

Between the hours of 12 and 1 Saturday night a soul in fetters bound was struggling to be free. Under the shadow of night's dusky mantle, softly and silently Death crept in and bore away the spirit of George Allen. Just in the bloom of young manhood, in the spring-tide of life, the Reaper cast o'er him the sable robe and deprived a fond father and mother, brothers and sisters of a kind and loving son and brother.

Some weeks ago he was kicked in the chest by a horse and received injuries, which, at first, were pronounced fatal. After lying dangerously ill for several days, a change for the better took place and his improvement was so rapid that he was up and about Friday. Saturday he was attacked by a chill and late that night his soul winged its flight to the Great Unknown.

To-day his remains were laid to rest in Columbia, followed by many sorrowing friends, who offered this last sad tribute of respect and esteem to his memory. He has been called to fill a higher destiny and is not dead, merely risen to a better life, there to enter the realms of the holy One. He possessed many of the noble characteristics that go to make a good and honored man. He was a devoted son and a true brother. Genial in spirit and possessing a fascinating manner, he numbered his friends by legions.

His Maker has called him home, and though your anguish is too deep to be assuaged by poor human words of consolation, take comfort in Him who has said:

Blest be the sorrow and kind the storm
That drives us nearer thy home.

The vacancy that is left can never be filled but they loss is his gain. So bereaved ones, be consoled and find peace in Him who has said:

Oh ye weary, sad and tossed ones,
Droop not, faint not by the way!
Ye shall join the loved and just ones
In that land of perfect day.
Harp strings, touched by angel fingers,
Murmur in my rapturous ear: --
Even more their sweet song lingers –
We shall know each other there.

The family of George T. Allen:

Per the 1900 Census, William H. Allen and Annie Louise Russell Allen were living in Tuolumne County. They had seven children but lost two of them, George being one of them. They later had another daughter, Eveleen Anna Allen, on January 28, 1904

George's father, William H. Allen, was born April 1857 in Illinois. His father was born in New York, and his mother was born in Kentucky. While living in Columbia and San Jose, William was a teamster working on roads.

George's mother, Annie Louise Allen, was born May 1860 in Illinois, the daughter of Hugh and Elizabeth Roussell. Her father was born in Ohio, and her mother was born in Indiana. In 1870, Annie was living in Sylvana, Liberty, Parke County, Indiana, with her parents and four older brothers, David, Jesse, Mark and Daniel, and her younger brother and sister, Thelman and Jane. The family lived in Indiana, then moved to Illinois and then back to Indiana where they ran a farm. Annie passed away November 19, 1939 in Oakland at age 79. She was at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Zella Allen McGarth, when she passed away. She was buried in San Jose.

William and Annie married in 1879. They lived in Nevada before coming to California between July 1883 and December 1885, the time between the births of two of their children. While in Nevada, William was a farmer, along with his friend, George E. Batchelder. Their farm was located in Mason Valley, Esmeralda County, Nevada. About 1900, the family moved to San Jose. They were still living in Columbia at the time of the 1900 census.

George's sister, Florence H. Allen, was born July 1883 in Nevada. She married William E. Hart, a Texan, who was a sign painter. They were both 30 years old when they married. In 1920, Florence and William lived with her parents on North 19th Street in San Jose. In 1930, she and William lived on River Street in Ventura, Ventura County, California, where William painted buildings. There were no children recorded. Florence preceded her mother in death.

George's brother, William I. Allen, was born December 4, 1885 in California. In 1900 he was a schoolboy. When he grew up, he moved to Georgia and passed away November 15, 1973, in Quitman, Brooks County, Georgia.

George's brother, Leslie Russell Allen, was born May 26, 1888 in Susanville, California. On June 5, 1917, Leslie signed up for the draft in Lake County, California. He was a married man with a dependant wife and living in Highland Springs, Lake County, California, where he was a farmer. He was tall and slender with blue eyes and brown hair. In 1920, he and his wife, Anna G., were living on West San Carlos Street in San Jose, where he worked on a farm. They had no children reported. In 1930, Leslie was a married man working in a cannery in Barrons, Jones County, Georgia, but he was living alone.

George's sister, Zella P. Allen, was born September 25, 1890 in California. She grew up to be Mrs. Zella Allen McGarth or McGrath, and it was at her home in Oakland where her mother passed away. Zella passed away April 23, 1974 in Cleveland, Cuyahoga County, Ohio, in a long-term care facility. Zella had been living in Mahoning, Ohio.

George's brother, Elmer E. Allen, was born October 21, 1897 in California, and he passed away April 7, 1969 in San Bernardino County. In 1920, he was a married man, working as an automobile mechanic. His wife was Florence B., and she was 21 at the time of the 1920 census. Her father was from England. Elmer: Find A Grave Memorial# 146445788

George's sister, the one he never knew, Eveleen Anna Allen, was born in California January 28, 1904. When Eveleen grew up, she became Mrs. Eveleen Minshall, a teacher at Summerville school in Tuolumne City. Later she became the principal of Jefferson school in San Jose. Eveleen passed away February 2, 1985 in Punta Gorda, Charlotte County, Florida.

At the time of Annie's death in 1939, Florence had preceded her mother in death. William and Leslie were living in Georgia. Elmer was living in Santa Barbara. Annie was survived by her above-mentioned children, five grandchildren and one great-grand-daughter, two sisters and a brother.∼Interment date
