John Raymond Azevedo was named for his great-grandfather, John Azevedo, when he was born in Sonora at the Sierra hospital on June 23, 1963. He was the son of Raymond Joseph Azevedo and Shirley Ann Allen.

John was only five pounds and was not breathing at birth. He was revived, but he was never very healthy. At the age of 35, he passed away on March 31, 1999, in Sonora after being found helpless at his home suffering from a heart attack he had two days before. He was transported to a hospital and passed away soon after arrival.

When John was five years old, his family moved into the family's ranch house near Tuttletown where his grandfather and great-grandfather were born in 1910 and 1876. He was a fifth generation member to have lived in that house.

John was devastated when his parents divorced in 1971. The sharing of custody of parents living more than an hour drive apart yielded to living full time with one parent and then with the other throughout his teen years. It was during his teens that he had his first epileptic seizure.

At the age of 19, John married. Two children were born during the marriage, but the marriage lasted only a few years. He and his wife stayed on good terms.

John did yard work, was a bartender and worked at the Gallo winery in Modesto for five years. He also took a disabled man into his home and cared for him for a number of years until the man's death.

John attended Columbia Elementary, Sonora High (Class of 1981), schools in Modesto and Columbia Community College.

John was of average height and had blue eyes and blond hair.
