Singer, Actor. A hairdresser by profession, he was introduced to French singer Edith Piaf by her secretary. They married when he was 26 and she 46. Piaf chose the name Sarapo (Greek for "I Love You") for him and they began performing as a duet, scoring their first hit with the song "What Good Is Love" (1962). Piaf died while he was shooting "Judex" (1963), the film he is best known for. He subsequently inherited her debts and was evicted from their apartment on Christmas day 1963. His hits as a solo singer include "The House Which No Longer Sings". Sarapo died in an automobile accident and was interred with Piaf and her daughter Marcelle. The motto on their tomb translates as "Love Conquers All".
