Born in Newton County (Chunky) Mississippi he moved to Newton Co. Ga at the age of 16. He was a celebrated barber in Douglasville, GA for 20+ years. Died 2-12-83 from a heart attack. Most people knew him as "Charlie" Moore who owned & operated the City Barber Shop on Bowden Street. He worked there with Bubba Lee, Morris Roper, Joe Smith, Benny White, Raymond Davis & others over the years. The shop was the hub of social life in Douglasville across from the courthouse, police station, and next to Joiner's market. One can almost liken it to Floyd's shop in Mayberry, NC. He learned to cut hair in the Marines.

He was PFC Moore in United States Marine Corps during 1952-1953 serving basic training at Parris Island, S.C. and stationed at Camp Pendleton, California. Honorably discharged he went home with his wife to Douglasville, GA.

He went on to become the Director of the Civil Defense for Douglas County, GA. Later he was Director of Emergency Services & then an E.M.T. working again for the county and became a fireman when that service was merged with the fire department.

He was known for making people laugh, a born comic and amazing cut-up when he had the attention. He loved music, old cars, farms & anything to do with his native state of Mississippi. He went to Hickory High School in Newton County, Miss. & lived in the town of Chunky. These towns are near the larger city of Meridian, Miss. (east central Miss). He moved to Covington, GA (Newton County, GA) at age 16 with his family. His parents were Vernon Moore (Miss.) and Opal Eason (Waxahachie, TX).

It's hard to travel in Douglas County and not meet someone who knows Charlie. He was also well known in his home of Covington, GA. where most of his family members still live.

He was approximately 5 ft., 7 in., about 200 lbs. and had incredible arm/hand strength. In later years he enjoyed chewing tobacco, cutting wood for sell and repairing anything that needed it. He hoped to buy a farm and move further out into rural GA. near the Alabama state line, but that dream was cut short by his unexpected death.

He suffered a first heart attack when he was lifting weights/doing aerobic exercises at the Fire Station on Chapel Hill Rd in Douglasville, GA. on Thursday, 02/10/83. He lived (2) days more, but died instantly from a 2nd massive heart attack in D.C. Hospital on Saturday, Feb. 12th. We buried him on Valentine's Day on a sunny Tuesday afternoon with hundreds attending.

He is sorely missed. Every day of my life I think of examples of Dad, I'm often reminded of how he lived and struggled to get ahead. I admire him and love him. He was the pillar of strength in my eyes.
