Mexico President. After training as a physician, he participated in the Mexican struggle for independence during the 1820s. He became a leader of Mexican liberalism in the mid-19th Century, notable as Vice President of Mexico under President-General Santa Anna for his social reforms of (1833-34). When Santa Anna left the capital, he was in effective control of the government, immediately obtained legislation that reduced the number of generals, ended the special privileges of the military and created a civilian militia, in 1835. Although his liberalism was out of favor, Gómez Farías persisted in Mexican politics, becoming president for a brief period in 1846 and was later unseated again by Santa Anna. In 1857, his daring social reforms became established in the new constitution drafted by then President Benito Juárez.
