Principal of London Bible Training College and YMCA Chaplain to British Commonwealth troops in Egypt during World War I. Wife's notes of his sermons and classes resulted in famous daily devotional classic, My Utmost For His Highest. In 1915 Oswald Chambers was commissioned by YMCA to go to Zeitoun, Egypt, where he ministered to Australian and New Zealand troops. Many of Chambers' devotional lectures make up a large portion of his classic book. His death, the result of a ruptured appendix in 1917, came as a shock to all who knew him. He had often told friends: "I feel I shall be buried for a time, hidden away in obscurity; then suddenly I shall flame out, do my work, and be gone."

Baffled to Fight Better, a message on the book of Job, was the only manuscript finished before Oswald went into eternity. It became many more after his passing, as his widow, Biddy, with the aid of the Oswald Chambers Publications Association, tirelessly worked to publish 40 books from Oswald's sermons, which Biddy had expertly transcribed. In the Forward of the powerful devotional, Daily Thoughts for Disciples, Eric Pearson shares ~

"Some years ago, before Oswald Chambers' widow went to be with her Lord, I remember her remarking to me that the Oswald Chambers books were confined in their appeal to those who take their relationship to God seriously. Also, the books seemed to come into their own in times of crisis, individual as well as national and international.

"It is therefore relevant that this new book of daily readings should appear now. At a time when things are being shaken, when people's hearts are failing them for fear, Christians need to know what 'staying power' means. As our eyes are upon Jesus, the Cause and Completer of our faith, we can remain steady and unmoved.

"Oswald Chambers read Dr. James Denney's, Jesus and the Gospel, a great deal and among many passages heavily underlined was: 'The English equivalent of the words in Matthew 10:38 is that no one is worthy of Jesus who does not follow Him, as it were, with the rope around his neck - ready to die the most ignominious death rather than prove untrue.'

"Oswald Chambers was a true disciple of Christ. He was passionately in love with and linked with the person of our Lord. He depended upon his Lord for everything and absolutely. To him the Word of God was inviolably authoritative and his faith was without reserve in Him who is the Lord.

"As of Abel, so it may be said of Oswald Chambers, '...he being dead still speaks.' (Hebrews 11:4)"
