Boxer. First boxer to be killed in a championship bout.Boxer. Challenging Sugar Ray Robinson for the World Welterweight title on June 25, 1947, he collapsed in the 6th round, was hospitalized and died within hours. Born James Emerson DeLaney to Creole parents from Louisiana, Jimmy made his boxing debut in 1941 and had several bouts locally prior to his match with Robinson. Because of suffering several heavy knockouts in Cleveland, the Ohio boxing commission would not sanction him to fight there, but a biographer of Robinson stated that Doyle had been pushing himself in order to buy a house for his mother. Criminal charges had been filed against Robinson but never materialized and Robinson gave the proceeds from his next four fights to the family for their house.
