Bill Horstmeyer began his racing career in midgets racing with the Badger Midget Racing Assoc. Bill moved up into the IMCA Sprint cars where he was very successful. Bill purchased a Championship Dirt Car and entered the "Tony Bettenhausen Memorial", a 100 mile race on the one mile dirt oval at Springfield, Il. Bill's car brushed the outside wall coming out of turn four on the 24th lap and began a series of violent flips, stopping upside down. The car burst into flames and Bill received severe burns from which he died several hours later in St. John's Hospital.
