Elbert "Pappy" Booker had competed in "big car" racing both before and after World War II and was the AAA Midwest Champion in 1946. Pappy was killed in the first heat race at a AAA sanctioned race at the Dayton high banked track on June 15, 1947 when his car clipped the retaining fence and flipped.
