Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. A successful lawyer, he helped recruit what would become Company K of the 18th Illinois Volunteer Infantry in 1861. Commissioned Captain and commander of the Company, he would rise to Colonel and commander of the regiment during his army service. He was brevetted Brigadier General, US Volunteers on March 13, 1865 for "gallant and meritorious services at the Battles of Fort Donelson and Shiloh".
