He was a trooper of the 7th Iowa Volunteer Cavalry stationed at Fort Cottonwood (later re-named Fort McPherson). Together with other soldiers, he went into Cottonwood Canyon south of the fort to pick plums. The party of soldiers was attacked by a large number of Sioux warriors under Spotted Tail. During the fight, Anderson single-handedly killed 9 Indians until his position was overrun and he was killed.
