After attending Sacred Heart Cathedral Preparatory School (San Francisco), where he was a standout athlete, he was signed as an amateur free agent by Baltimore in 1961. Bertaina made his big league debut on August 1, 1964, appearing in 6 games that season, and he went on to pitch in 16 games with the 1966 Orioles' team, which won the World Series title that year. He enjoyed his most successful season in 1967, splitting time with Baltimore and Washington; he recorded 7 wins, while posting a 2.99 ERA in 23 games, and finishing among the American League leaders with 4 shutouts. In 99 career games, he compiled a 19 win, 29 loss record, with a 3.84 lifetime ERA, in 413 innings pitched. Following his baseball career, he became an expert fisherman. He died of complications from a heart attack.
