Inventor, Industrialist. He constructed the world's first successful submarine torpedo boat, and co-designed the Civil War Union iron clad "USS Monitor" along with his Swedish friend Jon Ericsson. This vessel stopped the Confederate ironclad "CSS Virginia" at Hampton Roads, Virginia, on March 9, 1862, in history's first battle between ironclads. During the battle, DeLamater, who owned the Phoenix Company which constructed parts of the vessel, used his own civilian employees to operate the Monitor's boilers and turret machinery. These men later returned to their jobs at the company located in New York City, New York. After the war, he went on to invent and manufacture firefighting pumps, engines, industrial presses, mechanical refrigeration equipment, hydraulic stage machinery, and the great cannon which shot the human cannonball during circus performances (which was in actuality a gigantic spring).
