World War II Medal of Honor Recipient. He was killed in action. He served as a Private First Class (Machine Gunner) in the United States Marine Corps Reserve in the 1st Battalion, 6th Marines, 2nd Marine Division. He was awarded the Medal of Honor for action on June 25, 1944, at Saipan Island in the Mariana Islands. His citation in part reads: "Suddenly a Japanese soldier, assumed to be dead, sprang up and hurled a powerful hand grenade into the emplacement. Determined to save his comrades, PFC Epperson unhesitatingly chose to sacrifice himself, and, diving upon the deadly missile, absorbed the shattering violence of the exploding charge in his own body." The USS Epperson was named after Harold. The Epperson was launched on December 22, 1945.
