W. G. "Bubba" Arnold died on Friday, January 14, 2011, at his home in Liberty, Texas, at the age of 92 years. He was preceded in death by his wife of 64 years, Mildred Hightower Arnold, his father and mother, James Ernest Arnold and Grace Diehl Arnold, and his two brothers, J. D. Arnold and Eugene Arnold, and his grandchild Anna Jane Arnold.
He is survived by his sons, W. E. "Gene" Arnold and his wife, Nancy of Atascocita, Texas; James "Jim" Hightower Arnold and his wife, Sally, of Conroe, Texas; and Jay L. Arnold and his wife, Priscilla, of Liberty, Texas; and by the grandchildren he dearly loved, Jamie Arnold Egge and husband Rand Egge, Rob Arnold, Sarah Arnold, Elizabeth Arnold McDonald and husband Kris McDonald, James W. "Jay"Arnold, Ann Arnold, Sam Arnold, Caroline Arnold and Amy Arnold; and great grandchildren Maranda Egge, Brynna Egge and Zach Egge.
Bubba Arnold was a 1936 graduate of Liberty High School. At Texas A&I in Kingsville he was a three year letterman and co-captain of the A&I football team where he was a teammate with his future brothers-in-law, Don Hightower and L. V. "Dugan" Hightower, Jr.
In his senior year at A&I, and shortly after Pearl Harbor was bombed, he entered the U. S. Military Service and served as a Lieutenant and First Mate, in the United States Merchant Marines mostly in the Pacific War Theater where he was awarded a Purple Heart for injuries sustained in battle in the South Pacific near the Philippine Islands. He was honorably discharged after the surrender of Japan in August, 1945.
He was a partner in Arnold Brothers Directional Drilling Services, then worked for Livingston – Shrader Directional Services, Livingston Directional Drilling, and retired from Petroleum Directional Drilling Company in 1983.
