David Layton, 69, passed away suddenly Sept. 30 while on a trip to Australia with his wife. He was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and lived in Benicia from 1980 to 2004 before moving to Green Valley.

Dave earned his bachelor's degree from Lake Forest College and his master's degree from Thunderbird School of Global Management.

Dave worked as a purchasing agent for Cramer Associates in San Francisco for several years and later at TIMEC in Benicia.

Dave had a long history of volunteering in the community and beyond. He was a member of the Peace Corps from 1964 to 1966 in Tunisia and worked as a English teacher and coached basketball for Etoille Sportive du Sahel in Sousse Tunisia and lived and worked in the Philippines and Thailand. He was Past President of the Benicia High School Boosters and PAL Soccer. Dave was a former soccer coach and referee and Benicia Little League coach. He was the founder of the Panther Foundation and raised money to have lights installed on the football field in 1999. He received the George Drolette Memorial Award in 2000. He was a former member of the Benicia Parks & Recreation Commission and a volunteer at Queen of the Valley Hospital in Napa. He was an avid golfer and a longtime member of Green Valley Country Club. Dave also represented a child in the Court Appointed Special Advocates for children of Solano County (CASA).

Dave is survived by Cathy, his wife of 35 years; sons, Ryan Layton and his girlfriend Monica Garcia and Brenden (Miriam) Layton; and his grandchildren, Ryan Rio Garcia Layton and Laeli Layton.
