Mackey Divine was born in Philadelphia in 1842. He lived at 18th and Rittenhouse in 1861 when the American Civil War broke out. He enlisted on August 2nd 1861 and was mustered into Company B of the 23rd Pennsylvania Volunteers, "Birney's Zouaves". During the winter of 1861-62, he was encamped near Washington D.C. at the Queens Farm (Camp Graham) and Clark Farm (Camp Clark)for training and defences of Washington. He fought at the Battle of Fair Oaks and was wounded. After a brief stint home, he was on his way out of the City when the train car he was riding on came disconnected and was struck in thick fog by the Engine. The car was split in two and Mackey was killed. His body was taken to the Military Hospital at Darby and then buried on September 11th 1862 at The Church of the Epiphany Vault in Philadelphia (15th and Chestnut). The church property was later sold to buisnessman John Wanamaker and Upon the sale of the grounds, remains from 33 vaults in the church burial ground were exhumed and re-interred at West Laurel Hill Cemetery, South Laurel Hill Cemetery, Machpelah Cemetery (Defunct...Moved to Mt. Moriah), and Woodlands Cemetery . Mackey was buried at Woodlands on March 8th 1895.
