Robert Gordon enlisted on August 14th 1861 as a member of Col. David Bell Birney's Zouave Regiment, The 23rd Pennsylvania Volunteers. By September he was promoted to Sgt as the Regiment left for Washington D.C. for training and defense of The Capital. They encamped on The Queen's Farm and the Camp was named Camp Graham. Over the next few months Typhiod Fever broke out. Robert contracted the illness and was sent to Philadelphia General Hospital. He died there on January 8th 1862. He was buried at Mt Moriah Cemetery.
