Obit: Funeral services for Houston Herndon, 63, who died at 4:35 p.m. Tuesday at St. John's Hospital, will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday at the Thomas C. Smith Sons chapel, with Rev. Vernon L. Shontz officiating. Burial will be at Oak Ridge Cemetery.
Mr. Herndon, a lifelong resident of Sangamon County and grandson of William H. Herndon, Lincoln's law partner, died after a lingering illness. He was born Oct. 9, 1875, at Cantrall, son of Mr. and Mrs. James Nathaniel Herndon. His wife, Mrs. Lorena Reeves Herndon, died in December, 1925.
Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Helen Dunlap, Mrs. Grace H. Bice; four sons, James and Ralph D. Herndon, Springfield; Houston, Jr., St. Louis, and Harris Herndon, Oswego, N.Y.; a brother, Isaac W. Herndon, Peoria, a sister, Mrs. Mary Mitts, Cantrall; three grandchildren and an aunt, Mrs. Mollie Ralston.
