Houston Herndon joined the US Army February 8, 1927 and served until February 9, 1939. He reenlisted into the US Army November 1, 1943 and served until November 15, 1945. Like his brothers he was patriotic and believed in serving his country when it became necessary. At the time of his death he was a Railway Post Office supervisor. He loved his family, his country and its flag. He was also a big St. Louis Cardinals fan.

His great grandfather was William Henry Herndon, Abraham Lincoln's good friend, law partner and biographer.
