Harris served his country in the US Army for 21 years during WW II in Belgium, during the Korean Conflict and peace time. His retirement years were spent working on the Herndon family genealogy. He traveled to Virginia, Greensburg, Kentucky and the West in search of Herndon ancestors. He spoke of how impressed he was of his grandfather, James Nathaniel Herndon, as he was laid out in the family parlor in his Civil War Uniform. That was when he had his first thoughts that he would some day serve his country in the military.

His great grandfather was William Henry Herndon, Abraham Lincoln's good friend, law partner and biographer.
