Col. Jim was named for his paternal grandfather. Some of the places he served in the US Army was Italy (WW II), Korea, the Panama Canal, and finally Fort Huachuca, Arizona. He loved Arizona and cowboy boots so much he and Fern settled in Scottsdale and Show Low, Arizona. After Fern passed away he returned home to Springfield to live the rest of his life out - but he kept on wearing his cowboy boots.

His great grandfather was William Henry Herndon, Abraham Lincoln's good friend, law partner and biographer.
