Saxon Monarch. The last Saxon King of England (then King of Wessex), he reigned from January to October 1066. Harold was defeated by Wiliam the Conqueror at the Battle of Hastings on October 14, 1066. During the battle, Harold was killed when an arrow was fired into his eye.

Edith the Fair walked through the carnage of the battle so that she might identify Harold by markings on his chest known only to her. Her identification of Harold's body meant that Harold was given a Christian burial by the monks at Waltham Abbey.
