Mrs. Caroline H. Barthelmess

Mrs. Caroline Harris Barthelmess,
mother of Richard Barthelmess, the
actor, died yesterday at her home,
1 West Sixty-seventh Street She
was seventy.

Present at her bedside was her
friend, Mrs. Howard Chandler
Christy. Her son is in London.
Mrs. Barthelmess taught Mme.
Alia Nazimova English at the request
of Lee Shubert when the ac-
tress came to this country from Russia.
It was through Mme. Nazimova
that Mr. Barthelmess received his
start in motion pictures.

An actress herself. Mrs. Barthelm-
ess was her son's mentor.
He is her only immediate survivor.

A stage actress, Caroline appeared under the name Caroline Harris. She appeared with Mrs. Fiske in "Mary Magdalene" and played the president's wife in "Lincoln at the White House." She later played for stock companies and for the Shuberts.
