Oscar was a Kangaroo field mouse. He hopped a ride in a box loaded in Chula Vista on my husband's truck and then hopped out in our driveway. He was only the size of a quarter, brand new, and as he ran into our yard, my cat, Velvet, caught him.

She is well fed though and dropped him and came inside. I scooped him up thinking she may have hurt him internally, so I put him in an empty aquarium, gave him water and soft bread. I truly didn't expect him to survive.

Lo and behold, he got better and when I realized he was going to be ok, I didn't have the heart to put him outside. So, I bought him a hamster house and he loved it! He lived on peanut butter on bread, canned cheese, small critter seeds and vitamins, cornbread, and he loved watermelon too.

He had a white chest, tall and long ears, long feet and I discovered he is on the endangered list in California. As time passed, he grew bigger and loved to go around in his hamster wheel. I never actually played with him, for he was too fast and wasn't quite the cuddly type, but he was fun to watch. In his time, he went through two hamster houses (had to get a bigger one), and he seemed to be a happy little mouse.

I saw him declining in health these past few weeks and knew his time was coming. After all, how long does a little, field mouse live usually? But, I knew it would break my heart too, for he has lived with us for over four years and even being a little mouse, became part of our family.

I know there are many who would not understand this, but I am certain there a thousand more out there who do. I hope those are the ones who will be kind and leave a sweet note.

Oscar will be buried with my beloved Pablo (Border Collie), Bianca (white German Shepard), Samantha (precious 16 year old cat) and the future resting place of others one of these days.

Love and be kind to all living creatures, even those critters that may not be warm and cuddly. Life is precious and tenderhearted people need to protect those who cannot protect themselves against perpetrators who come in many forms. May God bless you, everyone.

Note: How strange it is that Oscar has died on the anniversary date of my late husband, Skip. And, today is the same anniversary of my dear, beloved friend, Gary. You can find them by clicking on the name Richard C. Riddle in Search. Then open it and click on my name and it will bring up my 16 other entries. Thank you all very much.
