Manhattan Project Figure. Born on January 9, 1912, in Oakland, California, Lansdale attended the Virginia Military Institute in 1933, and received his law degree in 1936 from the Harvard Law School. He later joined the Cleveland, Ohio, law firm of Squire, Sanders & Dempsey, where he stayed until the beginning of World War II. During World War II he became a noted security and intelligence officer and chief of the Manhattan Project that developed the first atomic bomb in Los Alamos, New Mexico. As head of the security, he also helped to appoint J. Robert Oppenheimer as head of the scientific team. After the war he returned to the law firm of Squire, Sanders & Dempsey, where he stayed until he retired in 1987. He was also instrumental in the Alsos Misson during World War II and helped to locate and remove the products of a German atomic project. He also served as a city councilman for Shaker Heights, Ohio, from 1949 to 1963.
