In 1987, she was made a Dame Commander of the British Empire (DBE). In 1996, she was diagnosed with Alzheimer's, but with sheer determination and the help of her husband, she fought the disease, but lost. She died on February 8, 1999, at age 79. Her brain was removed and donated to medical science, so that they might study it, her body was cremated.
