Dewey Shoemaker grew up on a farm in Indiana, the son of Jacob G. and Samantha Shoemaker. Dewey was the younger brother of Okle and the older brother of Rush and Walter. A sexton from early on, he was the maintenance foreman at Crown Hill Cemetery in Indianapolis for many years. It was John Dillinger's father who asked him to pour an extra layer of concrete around Dillinger's grave in order to keep graverobbers from stealing it. Shoemaker lived on Northwestern Avenue (now renamed Martin Luther King, Jr. Boulevard, which forms the western boundary of the cemetery). He is buried in Crown Hill along with his family (wife, Vivian, and brother Okle and son-in-law William).
