Soviet Russian actor and director. People's Artist of the USSR (1948). Winner of five of Stalin (1941, 1942, 1947, 1949, 1950) and the USSR State Prize (1970). He studied at the 4th Studio MAT (teacher N. Demidov). In 1924 he became an actor Arts Theater. Creative manner artist featured powerful temperament, self-modeling of images, vivid theatricality. In the 1950s, acted as director. On the house where he lived, there is an memorial plaque at (Gorky Street), now Tverskaya 6.
