Officer Henry "Hank" Nava passed away today from a gunshot wound he sustained on Tuesday afternoon while trying to serve an arrest warrant on a suspect. Officer Nava and two other officers went to the suspect's home, and were talking to a woman on the front porch. She told them he was not there and gave them permission to enter the house. Officer Nava went inside and began to search for the suspect; he found the man hiding in a room and yelled to the officers on the porch, warning them that the man was inside. The suspect opened fire, hitting Officer Nava in the head. Officer Nava and the other officers fired on the man as he ran out of the house. Officer Nava was taken by CareFlight to Harris Methodist Hospital. His condition never improved and he passed away shortly after 5 pm today. He had been a police officer since 1991, serving with both the Plano and Ft. Worth Police Departments. He was highly thought of by family, friends and fellow officers. He leaves behind a wife, Teresa, and two children, a 9-year-old daughter and a 4-year-old son.

Obituary from the Dallas Morning News, Sunday, December 4, 2005:
Nava Jr, Henry "Hank", 39, passed away Thursday, December 1, 2005, in Fort Worth. Funeral 1 p.m. Monday at Birchman Baptist Church. Burial: Greenwood Memorial Park. Visitation: 3 to 8 p.m. Sunday in Greenwood Independence Chapel. Hank was born May 17, 1966, in Austin. Hank was a loving husband, devoted father and son, a friend to all, and a reliable public servant. As a family man Hank was known for his contagious smile, and his love of baseball and law enforcement. If you saw Hank with his family you saw the man that he was, a family man. Teresa and Hank met in Round Rock. In no time at all they were married and they moved to Fort Worth, where Hank transitioned his career from Austin's Park Police to the Fort Worth Police Department. Hank's children, KayLeigh and Justin, were the life force that drove Hank to do his job well, and they believed their daddy was the best in the world. Hank graduated from Round Rock High School and earned his law enforcement credentials from Travis County Police Academy. Hank Nava started his career as a law enforcement officer in 1988 at Austin Park and Police. He continued his law enforcement career at the Fort Worth Police Department. Two phrases can best describe Officer Hank Nava, gung ho and ready for duty! His life's passion was to do what he was doing and to do it to the best of his ability. Hank's partners never questioned his ability to back them up, and knew that if he was there he would give his all in getting the job done safely, swiftly, and precisely. He was not only a partner in blue but a best friend to many; Hank had a tireless diligence to do what he knew God placed upon his heart to do in this life. The family would like to thank the Harris-Methodist Hospital, the law enforcement communtiy; the city officials of Fort Worth, the citizens of Fort Worth, and his many friends for their prayers, love and support. Survivors: Wife, Teresa; daughter, KayLeigh; son, Justin, all of Fort Worth; mother and father, Nancy and Henry Nava of Round Rock; mother-in-law, Linda Cruz of Austin; stepmother and father-in-law, Marie and Ernie Cruz of Round Rock; sisters and brothers-in-law; Kathleen and Scott O'Donnell of Georgia, Deanna Nava of Round Rock, Lisa and Russell Putnam of Georgetown; grandmother, Trinidad nava of Round Rock; sisters and brothers-in-law, Anna Cruz of New York, Lisa and Kevin Cleary of Round Rock; and many aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews.
