Son of the composer Charles, brother of the novelists Sarah Harriet and Frances, friend of Charles and Mary Lamb. Following a maritime career, James Burney achieved the rank of Rear-Admiral, and accompanied Captain Cook in his last two voyages. He wrote 'History of Voyages of Discovery', and was buried at the church of St Margaret Westminster, in the company of other maritime figures such as Raleigh, Robert Blake, William Rutherford and Peter Parker.
