Wife of Sir Richard Francis Burton, related to the Barons Arundell of Wardour in Wiltshire. Although living in the shadow of her colourful and famous explorer husband, she was an intelligent woman in her own right and wrote an edition of the 'Arabian Nights' with her husband, as well as his biography following his death. her own autobiography was left unfinished when she joined him.

She is unjustly best known for destroying many of her husband's papers after his death, including his translation of 'The Perfumed Grden', despite receiving an offer of £6000 for the manusccript. She supposedly believed that, out of a thousand who would read it, 15 would do so for scientific benefit, the other 985 for the filth (the book dealt with oriental sexual pactices). She was buried next to her husband in a unique tomb shaped like a Bedouin tent.
