He was deployed with the UK contingent of NATO forces in Afghanistan.
Sgt Amer was killed after he stepped on an improvised explosive device in the Babaji area of central Helmand province. He was fatally wounded and several other soldiers injured as they went to help a comrade who had been injured in another explosion moments earlier.
Age 30, from Sunderland. He enlisted in October 1996 and was based in Munster, Germany and then Windsor where he participated in many State Ceremonial duties. He served missions in Falkland Islands and Northern Ireland and also trained recruits in Pirbright. He deployed as a platoon sergeant to Afghanistan in early October 2009. Described as an exemplary soldier, he was also a senior non-commissioned officer respected both by his men and his superiors.
Sgt Amer is survived by his wife Sue and daughter Lisa, mother Joan, father John, along with other family and friends. Mrs. Sue Amer said, "The whole world should know that John was the best father that our daughter could have wished for. This cruel world has taken a hero who touched the hearts of everyone he met, a very special man who brought joy and laughter. The Army was John's world, he was mine. He was my best friend, the pain of losing him is overwhelming."
Funeral with full military honours was held at St Paul's Church, Ryhope, Sunderland on December 17, 2009 followed by a private family cremation service at Sunderland Crematorium.
