Our family Bible records record that he was born in Yancy County, North Carolina on 5 April 1822. His father, Martin Baker settled in Kentucky when Josiah was a boy. Martin Baker passed his life as a farmer, came to Texas before the war and died in Parker County, Texas in 1864 at the age of 72 years. There were six children born to the union of Martin and Elizabeth [Buchanan] Baker.
Josiah "Joe" Alexander Baker married Nancy Catherine Faure / Fore on 4 July 1844 in Union County, Georgia.. Nancy Catherine Fore, daughter of Jesse Fore, soldier of the war of 1812. She was the mother of eight children.
Josiah mustered in the Confederate Army at Old Fort Gresham South. Served in 10th Battalion, North Carolina Heavy Artillery.
Josiah and Nancy Catherine "Kate" Baker, their four children, Josiah's parents and Kate's mother came to this area in 1850 from Pulaski, Kentucky.
The Baker community grew up around their homestead. A general store and cotton gin were early commercial ventures all burned in 1977. The Baker community is a part of the rural heritage of Parker County. It is a reminder of early settlement patterns as pioneers came to this area and made their homes. Josiah Baker's signature is among those on a petition that resulted in the 1855 establishment of Parker County. The Bakers donated land for the Baker Community School in 1872 which was designated Baker School District No. 60 in 1884. It served the educational needs of children in the area until consolidating with Weatherford Schools in the 1950s. They donated the land for Baker Baptist Church, which was organized in 1854 as Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church by Noah T. Byars.
Josiah Baker's mother, Elizabeth, died in 1854 and was buried near the homestead which became the Baker Cemetery. Elizabeth Baker's grave is the first documented burial in the cemetery, which also is the resting place of Josiah's father, Martin (d. 1858), and his wife, Kate (d. 1895).
A Civil War veteran, Josiah moved from the community in 1895 settling in Crystal Falls, Texas with a daughter.
Josiah Baker left the Baker Community in Parker County in 1895 moving to Stephens County, Texas.
