Hi Judy: When my co-worker and I transcribed and videotaped Atlanta's Historic Oakland in 1998, I found W.W. Dye. It took a couple of hours to dig through the snow and ice and uncover his headstone.
As I stepped back and looked across the street..there sat a City of Atlanta Police car. The officer later said he thought we were trying to dig up a body. I told him, "We were. There's a soldier buried in the arms of Miss Magnolia"...meaning the tree whose roots looked like arms, wrapped tightly around his white stone.
There was something romantic about this young man.
C.S.A. Wiley William Dye enlisted on 4 March 1862 with Co D 9th Battalion, Georgia Infantry and died 30 November 1862 in the Confederate Hospital in Atlanta, Georgia from wounds received during a battle with the Yankee soldiers.
